The Dragon Age Universe
You can learn more about what the Dragon Age Universe is about, and its creators by clicking through on the link below.
But basically, Dragon Age is most well known for its fantasy RPG games, set in the fictional World of Thedas, created by BioWare, with David Gaider as lead-writer up until 2016.
What is the Best Order for the Dragon Age Universe?
If this is your first time, beginning your adventure through the Dragon Age Universe, or you have dabbled in sections of what is available to you, then we would recommend looking at the publication order post that we have done for you. This is because there is a lot of overlap with all of the content, and it’s great to see how the world that it is came to be as it did for the developers. And there is quite a lot that came out just prior to the release of the next game in the series that helped build up the hype, the anticipation and the promise of what is to come!
But, however, if you find yourself feeling a bit more of the pro side of things, you are looking at a new way to dive into not just the games but everything that Dragon Age has to offer and are looking for a new way to go about it, then look no further.
This post is for you!
A quick disclaimer before we go any further. Not everything is clearly pinpointed at an exact date at when this happened. Some is guessed or assumed, as not enough details was given or it came out prior to some real timelines was finalised – maybe even no longer canon. But we have included it all in, what we believe, is the best version of the Chronological order for the Dragon Age Universe.
If, however, you are looking for a more specific guide, focusing more on the reading parts of the Dragon Age, if this is because you, like me, are not much of a gamer for example (I play, but I am just very bad and very slow at getting through anything). Then we have broken down the universe even further to more specified Order guides, just for you!

The Chronology of Dragon Age
The calendar system that is most widely and commonly used in Dragon Age is the Chantry calendar. And this measures the timeline in Ages, with each one lasting one hundred years. And the current age is the Dragon Age, and is the ninth since the beginning and founding of the Chantry. Hence why, when you look at timelines of Dragon Age, which you will in our Chronological order, you will find numbers that look like this: “9:01” – the “9” denotes the Age, and the “01” shows what year in the Age it is.
In the 99th year of each Age, the Divine look for signs of things that is to come, that will give them the idea of what the new Age may bring and this is what it is named after. The Dragon Age was meant to be the Sun Age until a high dragon, that was thought to be extinct, appeared and went on a rampage, suggesting an Age full of violence and destruction.
The Ages in order are; Divine, Glory, Towers, Black, Exalted, Steel, Storm, Blessed and Dragon.

Perhaps this was what Queens did. Perhaps they held their Kings in the darkness, deep within their castles and allowed them that moment of weakness they could never show to anyone else. Perhaps they gave strength to their Kings, because everyone else only took it from them.”

In a time lost to history, a war ravaged the land. Mages, incredibly powerful wielders of magic, ruled the world through mastery of dark arts and forbidden spells. Their lust for power almost destroyed all existence, and unleashed an unholy pestilence, the Darkspawn, to plague mankind, trolls, faeries, and all the inhabitants of the realm. Now magic is carefully controlled, taught behind the sacred walls of the Circle of Magi, and monitored by the ever-vigilant Templars. This takes place just after the events of Dragon Age II, we put this here as it contains a four year time jump putting it long after the events of Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Enter knight Ser Aaron Hawthorne, elven thief Vaea, the magekillers Tessa Forsythia and Marius, and fledgling con artist Calix Pryde–a motley team of Inquisition agents whose task it is to recover the lyrium artifact before it’s too late. It is not clear if this takes place during or after the events of Dragon Age: Inquisition, but the one time stamp that is certain is Valya arriving at Weisshaupt in 9:41 Dragon.
The Grey Wardens are heroes across Thedas once the Archdemon has been defeated with relative ease and the scattered darkspawn are being driven back underground. The Blight is over. Or so it seems.
Valya, a young elven mage recently recruited into the Wardens, has been tasked with studying the historical record of previous Blights in order to gain insight into newly reported, and disturbing, darkspawn phenomena. Her research into the Fourth Blight leads her to an encoded reference scrawled in the margins of an ancient map, and to the hidden diary of Issenya, one of the last of the fabled griffon riders. As the dark secrets buried in Isseyna’s story unfold, Valya begins to question everything she thought she knew about the heroic Grey Wardens. . . .

It looks like this game will be set at least eight years after the events after Dragon Age: Inquisition.
Not much is known at this time, but below is what is guessed from what has been released so far.
According to the 2020 Game Awards trailer, the hero of the fourth Dragon Age game will be one their enemies “will never see coming.” Narrator Brian Bloom as Varric Tethras confirms the hero will not be a figure of prophecy or a hero with a “magic hand,” but a new hero set to take on Tevinter, darkspawn and even the Dread Wolf.
I’m not like a real rebel, you know. My passion is more like elemental magic, like explosions.”
