What is Hussite Trilogy about?
The Hussite Trilogy is a historical fantasy series of books that are set in the Lands of the Bohemian Crown during the Hussite Wars that took place back in 1419-1434. Set during a real period of history in Eastern European with a mix of mythology and fantasy. The main protagonist of the series Reinmar von Bielau, originally named in Polish: Reinmar z Bielawy (Reinmar of Bielawa), known as Reynevan. He is a doctor, a magician and as the story progresses, becomes a spy for the Hussites.
Sapkowski chose the subject because he did not want to add any more to The Witcher series as he felt that the stories were well rounded and did not want to add any more sequels. He chose to write something completely different and landed on Historical Fantasy. He chose the setting of Bohemia and the Hussite Wars as he said that he frequently visited that area. And that this time setting of the Hussite Wars is an important period in these lands, and closely related to the Polish history of the period.
Originally published in Poland from 2002-2006, the books have only recently been translated and published into English. The last book, Light Perpetual, only being translated into English in 2022 – the epic conclusion to the Hussite Trilogy.

Reinmar of Bielawa, sometimes known as Reynevan, is a doctor, a magician and, according to some, a charlatan. And when a thoughtless indiscretion finds him caught in the crosshairs of powerful noble family, he is forced to flee his home.
But once he passes beyond the city borders, he finds that there are dangers ahead as well as behind. Strange mystical forces are gathering in the shadows. And pursued not only by the affronted Stercza brothers, bent on vengeance, but also by the Holy Inquisition, Reynevan finds himself in the Narrenturm, the Tower of Fools.
The Tower is an asylum for the mad, or for those who dare to think differently and challenge the prevailing order. And escaping the Tower, avoiding the conflict around him, and keeping his own sanity might prove a greater challenge than Reynevan ever imagined.

The world, nobel sirs, has lately grown bigger. And shrunk at the same time.
You laugh? Do I seem to talk nonsense? Does the one contradict the other? I shall soon prove it does not by any means.
– Andrzej Sapkowski, Warriors of God
Overall
Sapkowski is described as the “Polish Tolkien”, his world building and characters in the Hussite Trilogy is insane. The amount of research and historical knowledge is quite simply astounding. These books will make you laugh, even in the bleakest of moments for the characters. And you may end up picking up a bit of latin along the way.
